Stay fit for the slopes

So summer is well and truly here. How depressing. Unlike most of my friends who are only happy when the sun is shining and they can head for the beer garden after work or the beach at weekends, I tend to get very grumpy around this time of year as I know it’s still several months until my precious skiing season starts up again.
I know there is summer skiing in many parts of Europe now, but the slopes are so much harder to get to, and not as good as the winter downhills when you do finally get there, that I long ago gave up on trekking for miles to get to a tiny glacier, just for a couple of hours of cross-country skiing. I’d probably just rather go to my local dry ski slope if I need a fix, even if it’s nowhere near as good as the real thing!
So I settle for flicking through travel brochures, looking at new resorts and destinations online; meticulously planning my first ski trip of the winter so it’s absolutely perfect. Oh, and I make sure I stay in shape so that I’m ready to strap on my skis and head for the hills as soon as I get there! Skiing can be a punishing sport, so it’s important that you try and stay fit during the off season. I just got myself a great new pair of Mizuno running shoes, and have been hitting the streets hard almost every night. My friend even dragged me along to her yoga class, which I have to admit was pretty punishing, despite my initial reservations. All in all, I should be well and truly ready to go when that first flake of snow hits the ground!
