ALPSA is the National Student Branch of the Australian Society of Legal Philosophy (ASLP), which is the Australian Section of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR). ALPSA’s aim is to encourage the study and discussion of legal philosophy in Australian law schools, and to facilitate discussion of legal philosophy amongst students, practitioners and academics. We support an approach to legal education that develops critical thinking, awareness of philosophical issues, and sociological and comparative sensibility.

 

ALPSA's events are officially accredited by the Queensland Law Society and the Bar Association of Queensland.

ALPSA's past events include:

  • ALPSA Seminars presented by Sir Anthony Mason, the Hon. Justice PA Keane, Professor Jane Stapleton, Professor Charles Rickett and Professor Ross Grantham, Professor Bryan Horrigan, Professor Peter Drahos, Professor John Carter and Assoc. Prof. Simon Fisher.
  • ALPSA Annual Lecture: (www.alpsa.net/AnnualLecture.htm) Presented by Prof. Sir Neil MacCormick, one of the most distinguished legal philosophers and law scholars worldwide. The title was: Does Law Really Matter?
  • First Seminar of the ALPSA Seminar Series: (www.alpsa.net/seminarseries.htm) Presented by Assoc. Prof. Simon Fisher, Barrister and Lecturer at the TC Beirne School of Law. The title was: Some Fundamental Themes in Australian Commercial Law
  • First Masterclass in ALPSA Masterclass Series: (www.alpsa.net/masterclass.htm) Presented by three renowned legal theorists, Prof. Martin Krygier, Prof. Alex Ziegert, and Dr Adam Czarnota. The topic was: Eastern European Law and Legal Theory.

 

Full ALPSA membership is open to all Australian students (undergraduate and postgraduate). Associate membership is available to all non-students.
